Essential Christmas Albums

A Very Furnace Christmas – Y.M.C.A. Christmas Version

One of the most enjoyable yet unusual Christmas albums out right now. The boys in Furnace & The Fundamentals have combined traditional carols and some of their favourite pop, rock and rap songs. Highlights include Gangster’s Paradise, Shook Me All Night Long and Just Can’t Get enough, all with a signature splash of Furnace energy and humour, with reworked lyrics and production to make it all about Christmas. This album is banger after banger. Be sure to add it to the collection this year.

Bing Crosby White Christmas – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Bing Crosby is as essential to Christmas as Santa Claus, Turkey, or dare I say Jesus himself. Released in the 1940's, this album has had more reissues and cover changes than you can poke an elf at. Bing’s soothing, buttery vocals provides us with the warmth and comfort we all desire over the Christmas period. No doubt he will be heard on countless 2020 Christmas TV commercials singing the glories of a White Christmas which we will never receive down under. Damn you Bing!

Diana Krall Christmas Songs – Christmas Time Is Here

This one is for the classy folk, the ones who refuse to get caught up in the Christmas cheese that is Mariah, Wham, and Buble. Diana is all about pouring some mulled wine and sitting by the fire place whilst soaking in the smooth jazz sounds of her and her piano. Whilst they’re all the regular tunes you would expect from a Christmas compilation, the jazz vibes bring a welcome and relaxing change.

Home Alone Soundtrack – Somewhere in My Memory

If you don’t watch Home Alone at Christmas, do you even Christmas? This soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy AND an Academy Award for best original song for it’s main theme, John Williams' Somewhere in My Memory. The track list includes all of the original score and choir songs performed in the movie but misses out one of the best tunes from the movie ‘Rockin Around The Christmas Tree’ by Brenda Lee so you’ll have to dive into another compilation for that classic.

Essential Singles

Last Christmas Wham

The most played Christmas song of the 21st Century up until 2015. George Michael wrote, performed, produced, and played every single instrument on the track.

Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas

Need I say more?

The Darkness – Christmas Time

Long distance love, children singing and rocking guitar solos with the blistering vocals of Justin Hawkins is what Christmas is really all about.

Dishonourable Mention

Michael Buble - Christmas

A bland and uninspired mix of classic crooner Christmas songs and traditional carols. Pass on this.
